FROM CHEF PENELOPE:
“I started making Swedish Meatballs many years ago for Noel Night. The nutmeg and allspice make this a classic Christmas dish, which is great for a party. I noticed that the dish would barely last an hour as young hungry folks piled their plates with food. As a joke, I started calling them “Schweddy Balls.”
I figured that older folks might know the SNL reference but I have been delighted to find that many young people have seen the skit as SNL often re-runs it in their Holiday Hits. One Noel Night a group of 20-somethings could not stop laughing as they had just that day (totally coincidentally) been acting out the skit!
It brings me great joy to share delicious food and a good belly laugh with returning friends and new acquaintances. This is what Noel Night is all about: Telluride folks truly enjoying each other’s company while enjoying special discounts and feeling so grateful for our community.”

A FUNDRAISER FOR SAN MIGUEL COUNTY SEARCH & RESCUE
Saturday, December 1, 2018
The Telluride Premier of Teton Gravity Research Film
Doors Open @ 5:30pm Silent Auction
7:00pm Film Screening
Live Auction & Jollification To Follow
$10 Donation To SMSAR
This 3rd annual event is the biggest single fundraiser for San Miguel County Search and Rescue (SAR.) The goals are to start the Winter season with greater awareness of backcountry touring opportunities, challenges and safety protocols and to support SAR.
Combining fun with facts, the evening starts with socializing, bevs and food, a silent auction, and information tables on avalanche preparedness, Search and Rescue services, SAR cards and volunteer opportunities.
A screening of Teton Gravity Research’s latest film ODE TO MUIR is the central highlight. The evening culminates with a drawing of great prizes, including backcountry guided adventures, safety equipment for backcountry trekking and ski and snowboard gear. Fun ski and snowboard shorts round out the celebration of community and gratitude to our search and rescue volunteers.

The event was 100% sold out in 2017. We raised funds for SAR from ticket sales, a percentage of High Pie food and beverage sales, direct donations and silent auction sales.
Through sponsorship, donations and underwriting by Bootdoctors, High Pie, Faction Skis, Mountain Trip, we were able to donate 100% of the proceeds to SAR.
San Miguel County Search and Rescue (SAR) is a volunteer based organization dedicated to saving lives and providing rescue services throughout the county. SAR covers approximately 1,200 square miles, ranging from high desert at an altitude of 5,000 feet to high alpine at an altitude in excess of 14,000 feet. SAR covers everything from lost hikers, technical rock rescues, helicopter extractions, and avalanche rescues.

By Colorado statute, the county sheriff directs and is responsible for all search and rescue activities. The San Miguel County Search and Rescue team has extensive training and skill sets involved in patient assessment and medical, high & low angle rescue, waterfall & ice rescue, avalanche rescue, swiftwater rescue, and high altitude diving.
Bootdoctors’ Events Planner, Bryce Young, felt such deep gratitude to SAR for their brave efforts to rescue many of our friends, athletes and visitors over the years that he wanted to give back.
“I realized that too many of our friends are losing their lives in avalanches and in the backcountry. We we need to, as a community, increase our awareness and preparedness for backcountry exploration. I want to emphasize the importance of making good decisions, being patient, and knowing where to get the information to be educated enough to make the right decision. I also saw the incredible time, energy and expertise that locals dedicated as SAR volunteers and wanted to celebrate them.”
Teton Gravity’s newest film, Ode To Muir, pairs professional snowboarder, adventurer and founder of Protect Our Winters Jeremy Jones with two-time Olympian Elena Hight as they embark on a 40-mile foot-powered expedition deep into California’s John Muir Wilderness. Their journey balances the challenges of winter camping, grueling climbs up the Sierra’s biggest mountains, and aesthetic first descents with personal reflections on the importance of the natural world and those who first traveled it generations ago, and sharing perspectives gleaned from what it truly means to explore a great American Wilderness.

Bootdoctors has always searched for the most innovative creators of outdoor gear. We seek out suppliers who strive for the highest quality while actively caring about the earth and engaging in sustainable sourcing.
Stio is a prime example of the best of outdoor industry suppliers. They are actual outdoors enthusiasts who integrate their own love of the outdoors with production of the finest products to help you engage in mountain recreation.
Galena Gleason, Bootdoctors’ Head of Purchasing, combines her lifetime of engagement in outdoor sports with her knack for finding the newest, most exciting lines to our customers. Stio approached Galena to be an Outpost partner the first year they started working with independent retailers. She explains that the clothing line immediately struck a chord with her:
“I took a quick glance at the line and knew immediately it would be a perfect fit for Bootdoctors. The quality of craftsmanship, sustainable values, and reasonable price points of Stio all align with the level of products that we strive to bring to our customers.”
A visit to the Jackson Hole headquarters reinforced her initial positive feelings. Galena:”I was able to visit the Stio headquarters in Jackson Hole 2 winters ago. It was very inspiring to see the design process from a to z being brought to fruition at the base of the Tetons. The Stio team is made up of very passionate lovers of the outdoors and it is evident in the product that is coming to market. They truly care about the consumer and are designing garments to withstand the rigors of adventure and time.”
Try it yourself!
The new 2019 Winter Stio is arriving daily in our Telluride Main street and Mountain Village stores. Come try it on. It may be a perfect fit with your activities, values and lifestyle.
VALUE DRIVEN BUSINESS
Stio’s values include being caretakers of the resources they use to create products, including Bluesign* approved textiles; being active outdoorsmen and women truly in touch with nature on a daily basis; being on the cutting edge of innovation; and balancing work with play.
Galena was also “pleased to learn they have a strong environmental initiative. The Bluesign* approved textile commitment speaks volumes to the ideals that are driving Stio as a company.”
At Bootdoctors we also believe firmly in the value of walking our talk. We wear the garments we sell and can speak the truth about their value. Galena has put Stio to the test herself:
“I personally own 2 Stio pieces and I find myself wearing them constantly. It is comfortable, stylish, and amazingly suited to withstanding even the harshest elements.”
From the web site: “We work with cutting edge textile mills such as Polartec®, schoeller® and Toray®,which are among the most sophisticated and advanced mills operating in the apparel business. We continually strive to source environmentally friendly textiles…
Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy! The leaves are turning and there’s a hint of snow on the top of the mountains.
The new SKI Magazine Gear Guide 2019 is fresh off the press. Time to get the scoop on what’s new, what’s different, what’s the coolest ski gear for the upcoming season.
And, once again, you can rely on the words of wisdom from Bob Gleason, founder of the Bootdoctors. As Bob tells it, he has the best job in the world as a gear tester for SKI magazine. He says,
”To ski all the next season’s skis tuned to perfection with a gang of rippers is such a thrill. I love to translate what I feel in my feet into words which clearly help folks make the best ski choices.”
Does custom bootfitting make a difference? See what the experts at SKI Magazine say below.
Here’s to a great season dancing down the slopes with the very best gear especially for you!
Before embarking on a two-week road trip on British Columbia’s Powder Highway, my friend Cooper asked for my advice about two particular ski boots he had his eye on, mostly because he read our reviews and could likely get them for a discount online. My answer?
BootDoctors’ good friend and Master Bootfitter Bob Egeland addresses the
challenges and opportunities with the new generation of AT boots.
Check out his hints on making sure your touring boots take you as far as you want to push it.
Then come in to Bootdoctors in Taos or Telluride to get your next pair of touring boots properly fitted.
We have Master bootfitters who specialize in touring boots.
While his profession might leave some feeling a bit squeamish, Bob Egeland, a board-certified Pedorthist, is passionate about keeping people happy in their ski boots all day long. And finding a comfortable fit is his top priority, especially for backcountry skiers who don’t have the option to take a break in the lodge if toes start to tingle.
Whether skiing, Nordic cruising or Fat Bike trail riding, we have all the gear
and friendly local advice you need for a great time at our 3 BootDoctors’ stores.
Shout out to all our great local businesses who helped make this a memorable experience!
