BOOTDOCTORS’ HAWKEYE JOHNSON: Why Does A Pirate Take The Hiking Trail?

HAWKEYE JOHNSON: WHY DOES A PIRATE TAKE THE HIKING TRAIL

Because he’s got a big Heaaaaart for helping others!

Hawkeye Johnson is a beloved hiking guide for the BootDoctors in Summer and a ski instructor for the Telluride Adaptive Sports Program in Winter. He is also the creative mind behind www.gohawkeye.org , an organization with a mission “To provide support to adaptive organizations and individuals through financial aid, outdoor experiences and film making meant to inspire people of all abilities.”

The GoHawkeye Foundation believes that the power of sports and recreation is essential to the quality of life by helping to develop confidence, independence and good health through physical and mental strength. These benefits are especially important for those living with a disability.  He is also co-producer of films about adaptive sports with Craig Stein. Their films showcase people overcoming disabilities and reaching their goals through active lifestyles and outdoor adventures.

Hawkeye is a TWO TIME triple crown trail hiker. THE TRIPLE CROWN AWARD is recognition of the dedication, commitment, and achievement of those who have completed the three major National Scenic Trails; the Appalachian Trail, the Pacific Crest Trail, and the Continental Divide Trail. ALDHA-West is the only organization that officially recognizes the accomplishment of these few intrepid hikers.

On July 23, Hawkeye is taking to the trail again, raising funds for GOHAWKEYE.ORG

This time Hawkeye is a trail blazer, hiking a brand new route in the San Juans of Colorado. The 250 mile, 5 week route starts in Telluride, Colorado and winds through the mountains of SW Colorado.

Hawkeye is looking for volunteers who are adventurous! Join him on a stretch, shuttle people to the trail, help him resupply in towns or maybe even host a trailside barbeque. The more the merrier. This 250 mile, five week hike begins in Mountain Village/Telluride and extends around the San Juan Volcanic field in the San Juan Mountains of southwest Colorado.

Hawkeye is calling this route the, GoHawkeye San Juan Trail. It’s being invented and pioneered by him, so it’s sure to go down in history as a classic trail. There will be many opportunities to participate along the way so join up today! Contact him at hawkeye@gohawkeye.com or call 970-519-1439.

You can volunteer to hike with Hawkeye for part of the journey, shuttle folks, resupply or help fundraiser by: CLICKING HERE.  Also, follow Hawkeye on his trip through: HIS HIKING JOURNALS.

GoHawkeye Sports Equipment Grants help applicants acquire outdoor sports equipment. Awards are based on funds available at the time of the awards cycle. Applicants are evaluated by essay content, financial need, and complete personal/general information as well as answering any follow up questions. Find out more by: CLICKING HERE.

The latest Go Hawkeye Giveaway partnership with ESI Ergonomic Solutions is the Kids Wildcat Handcycle Contest. Open to kids age 6-11, this is an essay contest (parents can help) to win a Wildcat handcycle, custom built by ReActive Adaptations. Bike builder Jake O’Connor designed this unique off road handcycle especially made for a young “wildcat” to rip on mountain bike trails.

Like to dress up as a pirate? Join Bob and Penelope at the Annual Pirates of Telluride Buccaneers Ball Saturday July 15, 7 pm to midnight at the Telluride Elks Lodge.

What’s the tie in between Adaptive sports and pirates? “Piracy represents a romanticized form of escapism, freed from the constraints of modern society. People living with the constraints of a disability are trying to find some freedom. Participation in adaptive sports helps make this happen.”

Join Penelope and Bob in dressing up for a cause with Hawkeye and the Pirates of Telluride for fundraising and fundraising!
